How is agentic AI different from RPA?
RPA replays a scripted sequence of clicks and keystrokes. It is fast and cheap for stable, rule-bound workflows, and it breaks the moment a screen, form, or exception changes. Agentic AI systems plan multi-step work toward a goal: they reason about how to get the job done, call tools and APIs, and adapt in real time when reality differs from the happy path.
The practical rule: if a workflow can be fully specified in advance, RPA or plain code is usually the honest answer. If it requires judgment, language, or handling variation, that is agent territory, with guardrails and evals to keep the judgment accountable.
What changes between a chatbot and an AI agent?
A chatbot answers. An agent acts. Chatbots respond to one message at a time and leave the doing to the human. An agent carries a task across multiple steps: it looks things up, calls systems, makes intermediate decisions, and finishes the job, with human-in-the-loop controls at the moments that carry risk.
That difference is why agents demand more engineering discipline than chat: least-privilege access to your systems, evaluation before and after deployment, observability in production, and clear escalation paths when the agent should hand back to a person.
